Dish Network Home

Satellite Internet is a relatively new technology which is currently available in two
types: fixed for fixed locations, and mobile for mobile locations. In 2006, the two
main providers of satellite internet for the U.S. and the world are HughesNet and
Starband. Currently, most of the satellite TV providers who also offer satellite
internet do so through HughesNet. It is common to see many satellite TV
providers offering DSL internet service in addition to their normal TV service, but
DSL is different than satellite internet. Not every provider makes satellite internet
service available to their clients. The great news is that both services, satellite
internet and satellite TV service, can often be transmitted through the same dish
at your residence or business.
When ordered through a provider, satellite internet is installed in much the same
way as satellite TV. An authorized installer must be appointed by the chosen
provider. The installer will make a visit shortly after an order is made, and make
the installation according to the required FCC regulations.
The advantages of satellite internet include a fast continuous connection
without dial-up, delays, or blocked phone lines. Download and upload speeds
of data typically reach rates that are similar to conventional broadband.
It is even possible to structure a network of computers which are connected to
the internet via satellite. Satellite internet is available to all 50 U.S. states and
many other countries of the world.
If Satellite Internet service is desired by itself, we recommend ordering from
HughesNet or Starband. However, if satellite TV and internet service are desired
together, we suggest choosing one of the providers on our comparison page
which is marked as being able to offer Satellite Internet also.
Two way satellite internet uses an Internet Protocol (IP) multicasting function to
broadcast thousands of simultaneous channels of data communication through a
single satellite. This IP multicasting works by compressing the transmitted data,
which reduces the size of the data and therefore the bandwidth used.
