While Dish Network is committed to providing the best of satellite TV, some of its subscribers may have to work with certain limitations, depending on their current location.
Types of Satellite Dishes Used by Dish Network
There are presently four kinds of satellite dishes that a Dish Network may be required to use in order to receive satellite TV access.
Single 18” Satellite Dish
This is the original kind of satellite dish issued by Dish Network. Nowadays, a solitary but high-powered commercial satellite (DBS) transmits Dish Network’s core programming to the satellite dish. For access to local programming, however, a second dish may be required.
Dish 500 Plus 24” x 20” Elliptical Dish
This is the most commonly used satellite dish today from Dish Network. An earlier version had to be replaced because of its inability to broadcast feeds from the FSS Ku-band satellite with an orbital location of 118.75°. The new version not only receives broadcast feeds from that particular satellite but also from DBS band satellites orbiting at 110° and 119°.
Dish 1000 Plus 24” x 20” Elliptical Dish
For subscribers who want the best of HD programming nationwide, this is the type of satellite dish issued for them. It receives feeds from the 129° satellite but may also receive additional programming, depending on their preferences, from other satellites orbiting at 118.75°, 119°, and 110°.
Super Dish 36” x 20” Elliptical Dish
Admittedly, this is the biggest satellite dish of all, but why should size matter when it allows subscribers to receive both local and HD programming from a single dish? The Super Dish was originally designed, however, to offer core programming from either 121° or 105° FSS Ku-band satellite and either 119° or 110° DBS-band satellite.
Programming Preferences and Location
All in all, the type of satellite dish issued for a particular subscriber will depend on the subscriber’s programming preferences and location. More options generally require a bigger or two types of dishes. Remote areas and those located outside continental United States also commonly have greater equipment needs.
Additional Satellite Equipment
Subscribers may make use of other equipment to enjoy optional services from Dish Network.
DVR Receivers or Digital Video Recorders are necessary if subscribers wish to record and replay their favorite shows. These may be purchased directly from Dish Network or other satellite TV equipment retailers. Dish Network also allows subscribers to lease this for a monthly fee.
HD Receivers, on the other hand, allow subscribers to enjoy HD programming. Certain subscription upgrades will allow customers to enjoy free use of HD receivers.

DIRECTV transmits digital satellite signals to households across the United States as well as Latin America. For subscribers in Alabama & Hawaii, these subscribers must maintain a different type of satellite dish.
Dish Network offers its subscribers a large package base to choose from. With local programming only an additional $5 a month and no additional equipment required to view this programming, subscribers are happy to maintain their neighborhood broadcasts.
As a television viewer, we recognize the importance of having local channel programming. With a new satellite TV subscription, the importance and ease of finding a provider who offers local channel programming is atop a priority list for new subscribers.
